The 5 categories
Scene Size-up and Safety
Hazard assessment, PPE and standard precautions, mechanism of injury / nature of illness, patient count and triage, and requesting additional resources — everything you do before patient contact.
Primary Assessment
The largest category on the exam. General impression, level of consciousness, airway/breathing/circulation assessment, chief complaint, identifying life threats, baseline vitals, and the rapid-vs-focused transport decision.
Secondary Assessment
Focused history (SAMPLE / OPQRST), focused physical exam, and reassessment/trending — the smallest category, but still tested.
Patient Treatment and Transport
The clinical/condition category: medicine, shock and resuscitation, trauma, and special patient populations (OB, pediatric, geriatric) — plus airway management and medication administration.
Operations
Equipment readiness, medication and supply inventory, documentation (PCR), responder wellness, and environmental emergencies.

Some topics feel like they could belong to more than one category — how are those decided?
We follow the official NREMT content specifications and the federal National EMS Education Standards, not guesswork. A couple of calls worth knowing: Environmental Emergencies is tagged under Operations rather than Trauma, since that's how you'll want to study and be assigned it; Shock is broken into its four causes (hypovolemic, cardiogenic, obstructive, distributive) plus a separate module on recognizing compensated vs. decompensated shock, since that staging applies across all four causes rather than being its own category. Psychogenic shock is taught alongside those four but isn't one of them — it's transient and self-correcting, so it doesn't stage the way the four causes do.
